Ilse Cabanillas
Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico, 1996
Ilse Cabanillas is a photographer and visual artist whose work emerges from an ongoing relationship with territory, memory, and the people who inhabit it.
Her practice is rooted in northern Mexico, where she works through long-term encounters with landscapes and communities, exploring the ways identity, belonging, and memory are shaped by place. Rather than approaching photography solely as a means of documentation, she is interested in what images can hold: traces of intimacy, transformation, absence, and lived experience.
Moving between digital and analog photography, her work often extends into material processes such as cyanotype, chlorophyll printing, embroidery, and image intervention. These processes allow photographs to move between document and memory, and between what is observed and what is personally experienced.
